Vibrational entropy of spinodal decomposition in FeCr

چکیده
Inelastic neutron-scattering spectra were measured on stoichiometric Fe0.50Cr0.50 prepared as a bodycentered-cubic bcc solid solution, and after increasing amounts of chemical unmixing on the bcc lattice induced by annealing the solid solution at 773 K. These spectra were reduced by a conventional procedure to a neutron-weighted vibrational density of states. Mössbauer spectrometry was used to characterize the extent of decomposition after annealing. A neutron-weight correction was performed, using results from the Mössbauer spectra and recent data on inelastic nuclear resonant scattering from Fe-Cr. The vibrational entropy of decomposition was found to be −0.17±0.01kB/atom, nearly equal to the change in configurational entropy after spinodal decomposition. Effects of vibrational entropy on the thermodynamics of unmixing are analyzed, showing a large effect on the free energy with the formation of Cr-rich zones, and a large effect on the critical temperature for spinodal decomposition for equiatomic Fe0.50Cr0.50.

Vibrational Entropy Contributions to the Phase Stability of Iron- and Aluminum-Based Binary Alloys
This work considers phonon entropy effects on phase stability of three binary alloys: Fe-Cr, FeAl, and Al-Ag. In all cases the vibrational entropy plays an interesting role. The phonon density of states was measured on body-centered cubic Fe0.50Cr0.50 prepared as a solid solution, and in increasingly un-mixed states induced by annealing the solid solution at 773 K. Mössbauer spectrometry was us...
متن کاملFormation of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Nanofibers Part II: the elaboration of incompatibility in the electrospinning of its solutions
Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibers with two molecular weights were prepared via electrospinning process. In this process, the concentration of spinning depended drastically on the gelation process. Also, it was experimentally smaller than obtained concentration in the solution entanglement number approach (SENA). Proof of this incompatibility was explained by the properties of PVDF a...
متن کاملParallel Spinodal Decomposition
Spinodal decomposition encompasses the ordering dynamics of thermodynamically unstable phases. An example of spinodal decomposition is the separation of the metals in a binary alloy. Because physicists have been unable to develop a fully coherent, consistent , and calculable theory on spinodal decomposition, computational studies have served as valuable sources of information. However, since th...

Nonlinear kinetics of both spinodal decomposition at early stages, and the dissolution of homogeneities formed during spinodal decomposition,is studied. Variation of the scattering intensity during a complete cycle consisting of a step temperature change from T i in the one-phase. region to T2 in the two-phase region, a period of spinodal decomposition followed by a temperature drop from T2 bac...
